This week’s unattainable apartment is in the Lucian Lagrange-designed 535 West End Avenue (at 86th). The new building has a 6-bedroom, 6.5-bathroom, 6,637 square foot home on the market. The unprecedented residence offers views in all four directions, as it encompasses the entire floor. It offers a generous foyer and gallery, high ceilings traditionally done, a wood-burning fireplace, and a dining room that comfortably fits a table for 16. Perfect for truly luxurious living, the exquisite master bedroom suite includes his-and-her bathrooms, expansive closet space and a personal en suite sitting room. The 535 West End Avenue building features luxurious prewar details: a choice of rosewood or oak flooring, traditional moldings, well-proportioned rooms and a formal library. All homes feature custom Smallbone of Devizes kitchens with an attached breakfast/television room. The kitchens offer La Cornue, Miele and Subzero appliances. Bathrooms are available in two different color palettes, and outfitted with Waterworks fixtures, double sink, mahogany or white cabinetry and a selection of mosaic tiled floors and polished stone walls. Although the area around the Trump and Extell residential developments on the far west side of the neighborhood is currently lacking in shops and restaurants, there is hope on the horizon for Riverside South dwellers. Two establishments are in the works, with possible openings soon. Wei West, a restaurant featuring “Asian cuisine,” and The Yard, a “wine bar, brunch, and pizza” eatery, are preparing to open at the corner of 68th and Freedom Place (between West End and Riverside). Judging by the current state of the spaces, it looks like the grand openings may take place soon. Click through for more current photos of Wei West and The Yard.

EMS workers work on Thomas Magill after his attempted suicide. Photo source: The New York Post
An actor jumped off the 40-story West End Towers residential building (West End Avenue at 63rd) yesterday morning but miraculously survived, reports The New York Post. Tom Magill, 22, jumped off the roof of the building at 10:44 am and fell over 400 feet before landing on a parked Dodge Charger. The roof and back window of the car, owned by a construction worker working at a residential building next door, broke Magill’s fall, saving his life and leaving him with only a broken leg, shattered ankle, and collapsed lung. He was in fact conscious when EMS arrived. While a suicide note was not found, the struggling Broadway actor reportedly wrote “I hate my life” on his Facebook page and most believed that the fall was not accidental.

The New York Society for Ethical Culture (64th and Central Park West) is hosting a continuing series of interesting films that spark conversations on ethics, and this Friday continues with a fascinating documentary. Marjoe, the 1972 film directed by Howard Smith and Sarah Kernahan based on the life of Marjoe Gortner, will be screened, followed by a lively discussion of the issues raised, led by Chris Everett. Marjoe Gortner was a precocious child preacher with extraordinary talents, immensely popular in the South, whose parents earned large sums of money from his preaching until he outgrew his novelty. Later in life, he spent his time using his fame and status as an evangelist to defraud those who believed his message out of a small fortune through both large tent revivals and televangelism. Eventually, Gortner suffered a crisis of conscience and decided to renounce his former ways, offering the film’s crew unrestricted access to him during his final revival tour, repeatedly admitting on camera that he was a con artist and revealing the tactics he and other evangelists used to swindle money from people. Entry to the screening and discussion includes popcorn and soft drinks. A $5 donation is suggested.
