Posted last week about a rumor that the recently closed Chase at 2139 Broadway (corner of 75th) is slated to become a Lululemon Athletica.

Thanks to intrepid MUW reader Karen, that’s now been confirmed.

Karen managed to track down a job listing for the new location on Lululemon’s website.

I spoke with someone at the 1928 Broadway location (at 64th) who confirmed the new store but was unable to provide an opening date.

I’ve walked past the new space a few times recently and from the little that’s visible through the windows, it looks like it’s being completely gutted. An opening definitely isn’t imminent, but it’s conceivable they could finish work within the next month or two if they have an aggressive schedule.

75th & Broadway seems awfully close to the existing location at 64th & Broadway. The Upper East Side has two Lululemons, but they’re spaced a little further apart (Third & 66th and Madison & 85th). That said, the Upper West Side is slowly becoming a yoga mecca (see last paragraph), so it’s a ripe market for expansion.

Lululemon’s competitor, Athleta (owned by Gap Inc.), sees the potential — they opened their first NYC location on the Upper West Side in August at 216 Columbus (corner of 70th).

UWS athletes, both male and female alike, have been getting quite a few new shopping options over the past 18 months. In addition to Athleta and the coming Lululemon, other notable openings in the area include JackRabbit Sports (140 W. 72nd), Modell’s (348 Amsterdam), and Eastern Mountain Sports (2152 Broadway, directly across from the future Lululemon). And just for kicks, I’ll toss the new Patagonia Tin Shed (2625 Broadway, near 100th) into the fray as well, as I believe they serve the outdoorsy sports market.
