Yes, I know — the Apollo Theater is in Harlem. But as I’ve mentioned before, the northern border of the Upper West Side varies depending on who you talk to and this is close enough that I thought it was worth mentioning.
The Apollo is having a free “Open House Weekend” tomorrow and Sunday, featuring dance, music, film, tours, health screenings and family workshops.

There are positive restaurant reviews, there are negative restaurant reviews, and then there are reviews like the one Steve Cuozzo of the New York Post wrote yesterday about Joanne (70 W. 68th), the highly-anticipated restaurant venture from Lady Gaga’s dad (aka Joe Germanotta) and celebrity chef Art Smith that opened on Wednesday (previous coverage here, here, & here).
The title of the review tells you pretty much all you need to know about his experience: “You’ll Gag On The Food At Gaga’s.”

Posted in December (here & here) that the Subway Sandwich shop at 2595 Broadway (between 97th & 98th) closed rather suddenly with no explanation.
Looks like they were bought out by the Westside Market slated to open next door at 2589 Broadway.

Two weeks ago I posted about a public hearing on a city proposal to significantly alter Upper West Side commercial zoning laws. The goal is to curb the proliferation of banks and chain-stores while protecting smaller businesses and mom-&-pop stores.
