Thursday, January 16th, 2014

A quick update on Saturday’s massive UWS fire that destroyed a Citibank and forced neighboring businesses to temporarily close:

MUW reader Don recently stopped by the scene and sent in this note:

The crowd-pleasing event is free and has proven to be popular with both kids and adults alike.

UWS CRIME: Woman Mugged By Three Inside Columbus Circle Subway Station

Thursday, January 16th, 2014

Scary situation inside the Columbus Circle subway station last night, where a 34-year-old woman was attacked and robbed on the platform as she exited an uptown D train.

DNAinfo has the details on the incident that occurred around 1:30 am.

The victim was apparently sprayed with an unknown substance, punched, and had her bag stolen.

The assault was allegedly carried out by three other females — police are investigating.

THURSDAY 1/16: “Louie” Filming On The Upper West Side Today

Thursday, January 16th, 2014

Great UWS filming location today, as Louis C.K.’s criminally-underrated series Louie will be in the neighborhood.

OLV reports production is in the area around Amsterdam & 76th.

Incidentally, I believe Louis C.K. lives on the Upper West Side (unless he’s moved in the past year or so).

Upper West Side Openings & Closings: Yapple, Crumbs Bake Shop, Columbia Cottage, Dig Inn

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

Posted on Monday that Frozen Peaks had closed at Broadway & 95th.

Perhaps winter is a bad time to sell frozen yogurt, because Yapple (2056 Broadway, between 70th & 71st) has also recently shuttered.

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

UPDATE 5:00 pm: All the passes have been claimed. Apologies if you weren’t able to secure a pair. I’ll post an update if I get any more.

If you’re free on Tuesday, January 28th, I just got hooked up with 50 pairs of free passes to an UWS advance screening of Labor Day.

The film stars Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, and is directed by Jason Reitman (Up In The Air, Juno). Reitman also wrote the screenplay, adapted from the book by Joyce Maynard.

Upper West Side Openings & Closings: Dig Inn Seasonal Market, Samad’s Gourmet, The Heights

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014

It’s been nearly a year since Card-o-Mat closed shop at 2884 Broadway (between 111th & 112th) and new tenants are getting ready to move in.

Dig Inn Seasonal Market is opening their seventh New York City location at the space.

WEDNESDAY 1/15: Monthly Casual “UWS Work From Home” Meeting/Networking/Social Event

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014

The January UWS Work From Home meeting/networking/social event will take place tomorrow, Wednesday 1/15.

These monthly “meetings” serve as a great opportunity for people in the neighborhood who are self-employed, telecommute, freelance, or otherwise work from home to get out and meet people in similar situations from around the UWS.

I’ve been a pretty regular attendee of the gatherings since they started back in 2011 and always get to meet some really interesting people working across a variety of fields. There’s networking and the exchange of professional ideas, but it also serves as a social event for people who don’t otherwise have a water-cooler to congregate around.

Upper West Side Openings & Closings: By The Way Bakery, Frozen Peaks

Monday, January 13th, 2014

Good news if you have a sweet tooth — the Upper West Side just got a new bakery.

It’s even better news if you’ve got dietary restrictions, as the menu is both gluten free and dairy free.

By The Way Bakery opened at 2442 Broadway (between 90th & 91st) last week.

UPDATE 1/16: Some Notes On The Upper West Side Citibank Fire (With Video)

Wrote earlier about the five-alarm fire that broke out in a Citibank at 2861 Broadway (corner of 111th) this morning.

A few readers sent in photos for that post, but the one above was tweeted out by @FDNY and I thought it deserved its own mention.

I believe it was snapped from the roof of the building at the SE corner of Broadway & 111th.
