MUW reader Jon snapped this shot of a manhole fire at Amsterdam & 87th earlier this morning. It’s the second such incident this week.

UPDATE: Apparently West 114th experienced several manhole explosions shortly after this post went up — additional details below. MUW reader and frequent tipster Ashira  just sent in the photo above, snapped around 5:45 pm Monday. Apparently there’s a manhole fire of some sort at the intersection of Broadway & 114th. Per Ashira:

A fire in an Upper West Side residential hi-rise brought out the FDNY in full force earlier this afternoon. The incident took place along Broadway, between 77th & 78th, and MUW reader Emma was on scene to capture a few photos. Per Emma:

Scary stuff on West 76th between West End & Riverside Drive last night. An explosion of some sort caused fire to shoot out of a manhole cover on the street.

Posted back in December about an early-morning fire that ripped through Georgia’s Cafe & Bakery (2418 Broadway, at 89th) — they’ve been closed ever since. Staff had originally said they planned to reopen “soon” after the fire, but it looks like that won’t be the case, as “For Rent” signage went up yesterday.
