It’s been more than ten months since word first broke that Verizon Wireless would be taking over the old H&H Bagels spot at 2239 Broadway (corner of 80th). They finally opened last week, just in time for Black Friday and the holiday shopping season.

It’s day three of “The Purple Fig Death Watch.” Posted on Monday that the restaurant had not reopened from their “summer vacation” as planned and that their telephone was disconnected. Then yesterday, despite all indications that the restaurant had ceased operating, a deal was listed for them on Groupon. Today, that deal seems to be [...]

A mystery opening of sorts is slated for the ground floor of the Beacon Hotel at 2130 Broadway (between 74th & 75th). As you can see from the sign above (thanks to MUW reader @dzoldan), a liquor license has been filed under the completely uninformative name of “Beacon Operating LLC.”

For nearly 40 years, 2239 Broadway (corner of 80th) was home to H & H Bagels. Since its sudden closure last June (full coverage here), the space has been vacant and a bit of an eyesore. Initial rumors indicated a bank would move in. In October, Queens-based Davidovich Bagels was considering taking over the space, [...]

Looks like 2427 Broadway (between 89th & 90th) is turning over again. In 2009, Accademia di Vino moved in to what had previously been home to Dock’s Oyster Bar, and eventually that transformed into Trattoria di Vino. TDV recently closed to make way for yet another new restaurant: Candle Cafe West — an offshoot of [...]

This isn’t officially Upper West Side news, but given that H&H was a neighborhood institution for close to 40 years, I figured it was worth a mention. After being forced out of their UWS location at 80th & Broadway over the summer, it now appears the legendary bagel maker might be evicted from their 46th [...]

After pushing back for a few days, it’s finally official — H & H is no more. The corner spot on 80th & Broadway now looks like any other empty storefront in the neighborhood, with a big “Store For Rent” sign on it. The two white signs on each door say “Zabar’s Sells H & [...]

Short opinion piece in the New York Times lamenting the loss of H & H, claiming “the neighborhood is finished.” The neighborhood may have lost some character in recent years, and there are way too many banks and pharmacies, but reports of the death of the Upper West Side are greatly exaggerated. I’m sure a [...]
The New York Post reports that one of the companies behind the iconic H&H Bagel shops has filed for bankruptcy. Garden Operation Realty, part of the H&H empire that also consists of several other companies, listed $5.1 million worth of debt in Friday’s bankruptcy filing, including a $3.4 million debt to the IRS and an [...]
