Meant to post this last month and it got completely lost in the shuffle. Popular Australian gastropub The Sunburnt Calf has shuttered (226 W. 79th, between Amsterdam & Broadway). If you were a fan of The Calf, this story has a silver lining: Two long-time employees are taking over the space and it will reopen with a [...]
Eater NY periodically releases a list of what it calls “The 38 Essential New York Restaurants.” The “Eater 38″ your answer and ours to any question that begins, “Can you recommend a restaurant…” This highly elite group covers the entire city, spans myriad cuisines, and collectively satisfies all of your restaurant needs, save for those [...]
UPDATE 6/21: Pet Central is officially open Frequent tipster Jim sent in the photo above, showing a new Pet Central store is moving into the space at 2643 Broadway (between 100th & 101st).
As I mentioned earlier today, I’m traveling until Sunday. With that in mind, here’s a slightly abbreviated “I’m On Vacation” edition of “Openings & Closings”:
UPDATE 3/29: NYT article – Tavern on the Green Draws At Least Two Bidders — And Many ‘No, Thank You’s It’s been more than two years since the iconic Tavern On The Green restaurant in Central Park served its last meal. Central Park Boathouse restauranteur Dean Poll was supposed to take over TOTG, but that [...]
Looks like 2427 Broadway (between 89th & 90th) is turning over again. In 2009, Accademia di Vino moved in to what had previously been home to Dock’s Oyster Bar, and eventually that transformed into Trattoria di Vino. TDV recently closed to make way for yet another new restaurant: Candle Cafe West — an offshoot of [...]

Tipster Kevin is at it again, this time sending in this photo of 474 Amsterdam Columbus (between 82nd & 83rd — thanks to Chris & CM for catching the avenue typo). This is the site slated for the Spring Natural Kitchen, first mentioned back in July. They were targeting a “fall opening,” so it appears [...]
According to MUW reader (and kindergarten classmate) Jessica, the Blossom Du Jour at 165 Amsterdam (between 67th & 68th) had their official grand opening yesterday. First mentioned in May, BDJ had been targeting a September 9th opening. Compared to other places in the neighborhood, being only a month behind schedule is actually pretty good!
Fashion’s Night Out is sort of dominating today’s posts, and this one is no different. Celebrity Chef Marcus Samuelsson is opening a pop-up cafe in Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall (Broadway & 65th) to provide “global comfort” food through 9/15.
It looks like the long-vacant former West Branch space at 2178 Broadway (corner of 77th) may have finally found a new tenant. MUW readers Erica, Robert, Tamara, and Sara all wrote in to say they spotted a liquor license application for Serafina taped to the window (thanks to Sara for the photo, and h/t to [...]
UPDATE 12/13: Caffe Storico at the New-York Historical Society is now open Going back in the MyUpperWest time-machine tonight to follow-up on an “Opening” post from last November, when Philadelphia restaurateur Stephen Starr announced he was opening an Italian restaurant inside the New-York Historical Society (170 Central Park West). The restaurant is part of a [...]
