It’s been more than ten months since word first broke that Verizon Wireless would be taking over the old H&H Bagels spot at 2239 Broadway (corner of 80th). They finally opened last week, just in time for Black Friday and the holiday shopping season.

It’s day three of “The Purple Fig Death Watch.” Posted on Monday that the restaurant had not reopened from their “summer vacation” as planned and that their telephone was disconnected. Then yesterday, despite all indications that the restaurant had ceased operating, a deal was listed for them on Groupon. Today, that deal seems to be [...]

Looks like there’s finally some serious action going on at the dilapidated corner of Broadway & 80th, previously home to H & H Bagels for nearly 40 years. Plywood went up today around both the former H & H spot, as well as the adjacent two spaces that used to house Magic Smile and Oz [...]

I first mentioned Gastronomie 491 (491 Columbus, between 83rd & 84th) way back in September. At the time, word was they’d open “sometime in October.” As with many openings in the neighborhood, things moved a little slower than originally planned. However, the wait is now over — the gourmet market and cafe is opening for [...]

So long, Patagonia Tin Shed — we hardly knew ya! MUW reader Anthony reports the store that opened in November at 2625 Broadway (near 100th) is set to close on March 26th.

A mystery opening of sorts is slated for the ground floor of the Beacon Hotel at 2130 Broadway (between 74th & 75th). As you can see from the sign above (thanks to MUW reader @dzoldan), a liquor license has been filed under the completely uninformative name of “Beacon Operating LLC.”

For nearly 40 years, 2239 Broadway (corner of 80th) was home to H & H Bagels. Since its sudden closure last June (full coverage here), the space has been vacant and a bit of an eyesore. Initial rumors indicated a bank would move in. In October, Queens-based Davidovich Bagels was considering taking over the space, [...]

Your commute is about to get a whole lot louder. Among those scheduled to get [...]

The picture above is from yesterday, but picketers are back out in front the Verizon Wireless store at 2268 Broadway (between 81st & 82nd) right now despite the lousy weather. I can hear chants of “HEY, HEY! HO, HO! VERIZON GREED HAS GOT TO GO!” and “DON”T CROSS THE LINE!” from my window. Here’s a [...]

If you haven’t already heard, 45,000 unionized workers at Verizon went on strike on Sunday over proposed benefit cuts. I won’t bother trying to summarize it, but you can read coverage from the New York Times or Google it — every major media outlet in the country has stories about it. Here in our neck [...]
