Your commute is about to get a whole lot louder.

Following the recent launch of a pilot program at four stations in Chelsea, the MTA and its wireless partner (Transit Wireless) have announced cell phone service will be expanding to 31 platforms in 26 addition stations within the next year. Among those scheduled to get service are all A/B/C/D/1/2/3 platforms between Columbus Circle and 96th Street.

The Observer has the details, but there’s no specific timeline for when service might be begin other than “within the year.” For the initial launch, only AT&T and T-Mobile service will be available — Verizon Wireless customers are SOL.

If you’d like to take a glimpse at what your future commute might sound like, The Observer also has a write-up of a scene they witnessed at the 14th Street A/C/E station last week during the initial pilot launch (as well as a great Louis C.K. video about technology).
