Apparently cupcakes are BIG business. The Daily News recently did a Q & A with Magnolia owner Steve Abrams, and it was mentioned that the chain did almost $20 million in sales last year. WOW! Granted, that’s across all their locations and not just the UWS outpost, but still… Now I know why I have so many friends starting bakeries on the side.

One line that jumped out at me was Abrams’ answer to the question “What is distinctive about Magnolia?” and his unabashed dig at Crumbs in his response:

“We are a full-blown bakery with our products baked on the premises. Crumbs is not a bakery. They are a retail outlet for baked goods made somewhere else by third parties.”

If you’re a Magnolia fan, or even just interested in business, it’s a quick read.
