12-Year-Old UWS Boy Mugged In Broad Daylight In Front Of School On West 84th

MUW reader Karen sent in a note yesterday with details on how her son was mugged in broad daylight on the UWS earlier this week.
I wanted to post it here. In Karen’s words, “I hope it will help other kids be more aware and stay safe.”
Just wanted to tell you about a mugging that happened this past Monday. My 12 year old son was mugged by three teens on W. 84th street between Columbus and Amsterdam at the PS9 fence. At 4:20 in the afternoon.
Three teens crossed the street from the Brandeis side over to where my son was walking home from school. He was walking past the fence that encloses the PS9 “yard.” They asked him what he had on him, pushed him up against the fence, said they had a gun, covered his mouth and frisked him until they found his new iPhone 4 in his front jeans pocket. They took it and ran away. My son attends Center School which is in the PS9 building.
I hear this kind of thing is not uncommon. We filed a police report but haven’t heard much. They do have some security tapes from Brandeis cameras and have the teens running away but don’t have the actual incident. They said they may have it on other footage.
I had just been with him at the corner of 84th and Columbus but he turned to go home while I went to Gristede’s. He was mugged half a block later.
I’m not sure what, if anything, can be done to prevent things like this from happening. If you’ve got kids, this seems like a good excuse to remind them to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times.
Hopefully this was just an isolated incident of kids being stupid.
