20 Years of Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

martin-scorsese-filmlincCome to the Walter Reade Theater (65th between Broadway and Amsterdam, upper level) this week to enjoy a special series that commemorates the 20th anniversary of Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation.  Established in 1990 by Martin Scorsese, The Film Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving motion picture history by providing substantial annual support for preservation and restoration projects at major film archives.  Since its inception, the foundation has been instrumental in raising awareness of the urgent need for film preservation and has helped to save more than 500 films.  To honor the Foundation’s 20th year, the Film Society of Lincoln Center presents a selection of these beautifully restored treats, ranging from early animation and classics of the silent screen to masterpieces from the Golden Ages of Hollywood and world cinema.  Enjoy films like The Big Country (1958), a western described as “epic poetry in massive motion,” Pandora and the Flying Dutchman (1951), a James Mason/Ava Garder film that represents the peak of Fifties romanticism, or Saboteur (1942), Hitchcock’s transcontinental couple-on-the-run comic thriller.
