2009 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Route
Since the 1920’s when it began, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has marched down Broadway to end at Herald Square near 34th Street. Brace for a change! Because of the updates to Broadway in Midtown which allow for pedestrians, bikes, and general hanger-outers to use portions of the street, the parade route will change this year. It still begins at 77th and Central Park West, but after leaving the Upper West Side, the route will veer down Central Park South towards 7th, then use 42nd Street to get to 6th, before making its way back to Macy’s. Don’t forget to adjust your plans accordingly.
Hopefully, the new route won’t change your parade viewing plans too much… if you are an Upper West Sider, the portion of the parade that goes through our ‘hood offers some of the best places for viewing. Specifically, Macy’s recommends seeing the parade from the stretch of CPW between 61st and 72nd. While the parade starts at 9:00 am, it is highly recommended you pick a spot and hunker down much earlier. Many arrive around 6:30 am or earlier, so if you want a prime spot, get there early with some warm clothes and hot chocolate. Have fun!
