2013 UWS CRIME STATISTICS: Felonies Down For The Year, Still Way Above 2011 Levels

Thursday, January 9th, 2014

With 2013 in the books, it’s time to take a look at Upper West Side crime statistics for the year that was.

The good news is that neighborhood precincts showed a modest downturn in major crime during the year.

Through December 29th, the 20th and 24th precincts — which cover 59th to 110th Streets, between Central Park and the Hudson — saw a total of 1,980 serious crimes (i.e., murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and grand larceny auto).

That equates to a roughly 6% drop compared to 2012, which is good. However, 2012 saw a huge uptick in crime compared to a historic drop in 2011, do despite this past year’s decrease, crime rates are still nearly 12% higher than they were just two years ago.

You can check out statistics from previous years here:

While there’s been some zig-zagging the past two years, the long-term trend is more clear cut, with neighborhood crime down 30% since 2001 and over 75% since 1993.

Felony crime in Central Park — patrolled by the 22nd Precinct — actually increased by close to 3%, following a nearly identical drop in 2012. However, it’s important to note that we’re talking about a small sample size here: 104 incidents in 2013 compared to 101 the previous year.

Less serious crime reported by the 22nd (petit larceny, misdemeanor assault, and misdemeanor sex crimes) was essentially unchanged for the year, with 150 in 2013 compared to 151 in 2012.

According to the Central Park Conservancy, more than 38 million people visit the park each year (with Upper West Siders leading the way), so the above figures are actually quite small as a percentage of visitors. Crime is an unfortunate part of life, but all things considered, Central Park is a very safe place.

In terms of city-wide trends, NYC saw its fewest murders and shootings ever in 2013.

Here are the detailed crime stats for the Upper West Side in 2013:

20th Precinct (W. 59th - W. 86th Streets)

22nd Precinct (Central Park)

24th Precinct (W. 86th - W. 110th Streets)
