Sad news this morning, as a 26-year-old woman was struck and killed earlier today while crossing West 96th Street near Broadway.
DNAinfo reports the incident happened just before 5:00 am:
According to police, the woman was crossing West 96th Street mid-block between Broadway and West End Avenue, when she was hit by the driver’s side mirror of a westbound St. Luke’s Hospital ambulance, police said.
The woman then fell into the street, where she was then struck by a red Dodge Charger sedan headed eastbound.
This is the third pedestrian death near that part of the UWS in just over a week.
Last Friday, a 9-year-old boy and 73-year-old man were killed in separate accidents roughly 30 minutes apart at West 96th and West 97th Streets.
MUW reader Anne e-mailed a little while ago to report police are camped out in the area this morning and issuing tickets for jaywalking:
There are a bunch of police enforcing the crosswalks at 96th and Broadway this AM. I think I just overheard a woman getting a summons for crossing in the crosswalk but without the light.
I’ve heard reports from others about jaywalking tickets in the area recently, so it’s unclear if this is directly related to today’s accident or part of a larger initiative by the NYPD.
