UPDATE 9:34 am: Just saw tweets from @NYCityAlerts and @NYScanner indicating three people were hit by the car (including the child)

@NYCityAlerts: West 97 St & Amsterdam Ave. 3 pedestrians struck by a vehicle, 1 child removed in critical condition. NYPD Hwy CIS requested.

@NYScanner: West 97 St & Amsterdam Ave 3 Pedestrian Struck 1 child in Critical Condition. NYPD Has the driver in custody.

Between the mention of CIS and the note that the driver is in custody, this may be more than just an accident. (CIS stands for “Collision Investigation Squad” — thanks to MUW readers Yoni & Melissa for the tip).

UPDATE 9:40 am: Found the photo above taken by @DannyJCohen, who tweeted the following at 8:42 am:

I heard a loud crash, then tires screeching, then a lot of screaming. Can’t see it from my window.

UPDATE 9:45 am: Eyewitness News reporter @DarlaMiles7 has tweeted the following:

A toddler hit by SUV while crossing W97th w/her mother.

Looks like they’re going to have a report during their 12:00 pm broadcast.

Upsetting news to start the day:

DNAinfo is reporting that a 3-year-old was struck by a car during this morning’s rush hour at Amsterdam & 97th.

Limited details at this time, but DNA reports “the child was rushed to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in serious condition.”

According to MUW reader @daytimedream, the incident occurred around 8:25 am.

NOTE: Lots of reports from readers about helicopters in the neighborhood this morning — I think it’s news crews reporting on this.
