Tonight marks the start of the annual “Mostly Mozart” festival at Lincoln Center.

The festival was launched in 1966 as “Midsummer Serenades: A Mozart Festival.”  After two seasons consisting entirely of the music of Mozart, the festival was reworked as “Mostly Mozart,” a Mozart-and-more festival designed to provide a more informal ambiance for concert-going, offering relatively inexpensive ticket prices and attracting both those who might not go to a more formal classical music concert during the season as well as the sophisticated music lover. You can read the full history here.

This year’s festival kicks off tonight with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra at 8:00 pm at Avery Fisher Hall (Broadway & 65th). There are still tickets available from $45 and up. Tickets to Wednesday’s performance can be had starting at $35 (for now).

UPDATE: If you can’t/didn’t make it, or don’t/didn’t want to spend the cash, the entire 8/2 performance (almost 2 hours) is available online until 8/9/11.

Discount packages are available if you purchase tickets to multiple shows:

  • Pick three events at Avery Fisher Hall — Save 20%
  • Pick four or more events at Avery Fisher Hall — Save 30%
