96th Street Subway Station Opens for Business

After more than two years of construction, the glass-enclosed update to the 96th Street 1/2/3 subway station is finally finished, welcoming the public yesterday. The station, one of the oldest in the system, began its multimillion dollar renovation in August 2007, hitting some trouble throughout the construction with budget cuts. Nevertheless, the station seems to be looking pretty good (there is no doubt a vast improvement from its old sorry state), and we haven’t heard any complaints about it yet. Yes, it has been less than 48 hours, but the fact that it’s still up and running counts for something, right? We haven’t been to the station yet, but these photos came into a tipster for Curbed. If you have seen the new station, tell us: how is it? Is the station filled with bird and nature sounds, as promised?
