AMNH President Ellen V. Futter introduces Explorer at a museum press conference last week.

The American Museum of Natural History (Central Park West at 79th) is giving patrons a new way to tour the 45 exhibition halls.  Last week, the AMNH previewed Explorer, an iPhone app that is designed as an indoor navigation tool.  The app functions as an “indoor GPS” to guide you through the museum, pinpointing your location and offering turn-by-turn directions to halls and visitor facilities, supplementary information
about exhibits, and more.  It also features customizable tours, a fossil treasure hunt, and social media links for posting to Facebook and Twitter.  Don’t have an iPhone or iPod Touch?  Don’t worry.  The museum will supply more than 350 iPod Touch devices for those who want to try out Explorer but don’t have their own device.  It’s an amazingly cool new way to discover the museum, bringing the millions of years of history to your fingertips using modern-day technology.  Stop by AMNH and check it out.
