UPDATE 8:30 pm: UWS Openings: Alamo Drafthouse = All Kinds Of Awesome

Pretty exciting UWS news broke a little earlier today:

The long-vacant Metro Theater (2626 Broadway, between 99th & 100th) is being reborn as an Alamo Drafthouse, a fantastic cinema chain based out of Austin, TX.

I’ll have more news in tonight’s “Openings/Closings” post, but here’s a blog post and press release from Alamo Drafthouse (h/t to @areacode212, Craig, Kimdog, Ann, and Jill).

Holy moly, you guys. This is an announcement I’ve been waiting to go public for quite sometime. It’s also something we’ve been talking about for years. As soon as the two Alamos merged (local and franchise operations), and we knew we’d be expanding more, New York was at the top of that list. This is going to be an excellent location and we are going to put a lot of effort into guaranteeing that the Alamo experience stands strong in the massive city that is New York. Read the official press release below. New York, we’ll see you soon.

Austin, TX— Thursday, April 5, 2012— Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is pleased to unveil its plans for its first location in New York.  The five-screen Manhattan-area theater will be owned and operated by Alamo Drafthouse and located on the Upper West Side, occupying the former Metro Theater at 2626 Broadway.

“My often-stated top priority for the Alamo Drafthouse has been to open a venue in New York,” said Alamo founder and CEO Tim League.  “When we discovered the availability of the historic Metro theater, we immediately knew we had found the perfect location for our new Manhattan home.”

The venue will feature five screens of new releases, repertory programming and the Alamo’s unique signature programming.  Like all Alamo Drafthouse theaters, the Alamo Drafthouse at the Metro will provide food and drink service to your seat and will uphold its famously strict no-talking policy.  The new theater is currently scheduled to open in 2013.
