BREAKING: Small Fire At Zabar’s Draws Sizable FDNY Response
Posted @ 12:05 am (6/28/12)
Heard a bunch of sirens near me a little while ago and went outside to investigate.
Turns out there was some sort of fire at Zabar’s.
A manager told me they plan to be open on Thursday — don’t be surprised if the lox isn’t the only thing in the store that’s smoked.
Details are limited, but multiple firemen told me the incident was likely related to one of the store’s refrigeration units.
By the time I arrived (around 11:15 pm), everything looked to be under control and none of the firefighters seemed particularly concerned by the situation. There was still quite a bit of smoke visible inside the store (top-left photo below, although it’s a little hard to tell) and several fans had been set up to ventilate it.
I counted five firetrucks as well as two other FDNY vehicles and some NYPD units. I would have taken more interior photos if not for a cop yelling at me over the loudspeaker of his car to move away.

UPDATE: MUW reader Brian was at the scene a few minutes before me and sent in the photos below showing firemen running a hose into Zabar’s. You can also make out what appears to thicker smoke inside the store than what I captured in the photos above. That’s also his photo at the top of the post.
