A transformer fire underground has led to several explosions underneath 70th Street between Broadway and Columbus.  So far, no buildings have been affected and no injuries have been reported, but the firefighters have been unable to stop the explosions from occurring.  The fire likely broke out between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm today, and as of 7:00 pm, seven explosions have occurred.  When another explosion occurs, there is a loud noise and the manhole in the street releases large clouds of black smoke.  My Upper West staff has heard that subway service has been interrupted or closed, but the MTA’s website has not yet reported interruptions.  Hopefully, emergency response will control the situation soon.  If you have any further information or updates, please email “alerts [at] myupperwest.com”, and we will send updates if we get them.
