Broadway’s Best Coming to the UWS for the 2011 Tony Awards
The New York Post reports that Broadway’s most highly-regarded awards show is moving to the Upper West Side. The Tony Awards, which had taken place at Radio City Music Hall for over a decade, will move to the Beacon Theatre (Broadway at 74th) in 2011. The show, which will take place next June, will have a “fresh feel, new set, and clean palette,” according to executive producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner. The reason for the move is not just to shake things up for fun, however… Radio City Music Hall needs to make room for a new Cirque du Soleil production slated for next year. In addition to the uptown move and updates to the show, the audience will shrink, as the Beacon has a 2,894 person capacity, less than half of the almost-6,000 person capacity at Radio City Music Hall.
