Bronx Man Charged with Stealing Millions from Columbia

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

columbia-uDNAinfo reports that a Bronx man was arrested for stealing more than $4.5 million from Columbia University.  George Castro, 48, was arrested for embezzling millions from the university on Wednesday, being taken from his Bronx home where he allegedly had $200,000 in cash and a brand new $80,000 Audi parked out front.  Castro was “familiar with the university’s accounts payable system,” according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office court documents, and he reportedly embezzled the money by adding a new, unauthorized account to Columbia’s electronic payment system last month.  Castro, who is charged with one count of grand larceny in the first degree and one count of criminal possession of stolen property in the first degree, claims the funds just appeared in his account.
