Monday, August 9th, 2010

cafe-des-artistesThe Wall Street Journal reports that Café des Artistes, the iconic Upper West Side restaurant on 67th between Central Park West and Columbus that closed last August due to financial losses and union costs, will get some new life.  Restaurateur Gianfranco Sorrentino has reached an agreement to rent the space in a 15-year lease with plans to open the restaurant in February or March as a Southern Italian restaurant.  While Sorrentino plans to preserve the charm of the café, he will be changing the name and menu to reflect his Naples-influenced background.  He will put in about $1.5 million to renovate the space, and has already announced that the executive chef will be Vito Gnazzo, the chef of Mr. Sorrentino’s other restaurant, Il Gottopardo, across the street from the Museum of Modern Art.  Get more information about the Café des Artistes rebirth at The Wall Street Journal.
