Two More Carriage Horse Accidents Leave ASPCA Concerned

The ASPCA expressed their concern after two carriage horse collisions occurred this month, according to Gothamist. The first accident occurred on May 1st, when “a horse pulling a carriage spooked and crashed at the intersection of Central Park South and Columbus Circle” after running across Central Park South against the traffic and “sideswiping several cars” before crashing. 10 days later, this photo was snapped after a carriage collision with a taxi in Central Park. A rep for the ASPCA spoke to Gothamist about the two incidents, saying that they “independently investigated both incidents” and that “Dr. Pamela Corey, the ASPCA’s Director of Equine Veterinary Services, confirmed that both horses were examined multiple times and neither horse was injured.” While these horses allegedly got through the incidents without injury, many (including the ASPCA) still worry that the recent accidents are just highlighting the danger to horses in the carriage industry. Animal rights groups continue to fight to ban carriage horses in the city, and the ASPCA concurs. “These two horses fortunately escaped unscathed from these accidents, but others in the past haven’t been so fortunate,” says the ASPCA’s rep. “Horses and traffic are a dangerous combination.” Read more about the carriage horse controversy here.
