Central Park Boathouse Facing Union Battle, Rally Scheduled For 4:30 pm Today
The tranquil feel at the Central Park Boathouse restaurant seems to be limited strictly to the front of the house, according to union members who work there.
The New York Times is reporting that workers at the Boathouse are complaining about “overbearing managers who play favorites with the rank and file, of work rules that are inconsistently applied and of tips that are confiscated.”
In order to draw attention to the matter, the union that represents Boathouse workers, the New York Hotels Trade Council, has scheduled a rally at the Boathouse for this afternoon at 4:30 pm.
There’s a lot of nastiness flying around this. A spokesman for restaurateur Dean Poll claims “The rally is yet another example of the union attempting to force its will on the employees of the Boathouse.” On the flip-side, a post on the union’s website states “Boathouse operator Dean Poll is one of the worst employers the Union has ever encountered.”
Lots more juicy stuff in both the Times post and the union’s website.
