A carriage horse dropped dead in the middle of the street yesterday morning on its way to Central Park. Animal activists are, unsurprisingly, up in arms.

The incident reminded me of an article in the New York Times earlier this month that I never got around to posting. The model in the photo above is what horse advocates want to replace horse-drawn carriages with: a faux-vintage electric car with “white-walled tires, running boards, mahogany and an ‘ah-hoogah’ horn.”

The Daily News has a brief story on the horse (click through if you want to see a dead horse lying in the street). The more interesting stuff is at NYT’s City Room blog, which details the proposed carriage replacement vehicle.

NY-Class, which stands for New Yorkers for Clean, Livable and Safe Streets, is behind the proposal. Says Ed Sayres, co-president of NY-Class and president of the ASPCA:

“They’re guaranteed not to urinate or defecate in the middle of your romantic moment.”

Per NYT:

The cars are projected to cost $125,000 to $175,000. NY-Class envisions that a nonprofit group that provides financing to start-ups would buy the cars and lease them to drivers for $21,000 a year. Purchasing a new horse and carriage costs $15,000 on average.
