Central Park’s East Meadow Closes for Reconstruction
Central Park’s East Meadow, the vast expanse of grass and all-weather sporting fields, is getting a makeover. The Central Park Conservancy closed down the six-acre meadow on the east side of the park between 97th and 100th recently to begin the year-long reconstruction project on the space. The East Meadow has been left worn and deteriorated from decades of heavy use and poor drainage, so the Conservancy plans to transform the landscape into a healthy green space by reconstructing paths, storm drainage infrastructure, the lawn, and lighting infrastructure, regrading the landscape for improved drainage, adding three clay ovals for all-weather sports, and installing an automatic irrigation system. The work is expected to be completed in the fall of 2011. Read more about the reconstruction and detours for surrounding areas at the Conservancy’s website.
