Columbus Square Begins to Seek Out Small Retailers

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

columbus-square-retailNow that a slew of big-name chains have settled into Columbus Square, the large development surrounding Columbus between 97th and 100th, the realty group who is filling retail space is looking to community businesses.  Winick Realty Group sent out a press release this week announcing their search for smaller retailers to fill the remaining spaces, ranging from 2,700 to 8,000 square feet, with the search specifically targeting “Manhattan Upper West Side businesses that are familiar with the needs of the community.”  Aiming to complement the abundant big-box retailers in the development (the current retailers include TJ Maxx, Sephora, Whole Foods, Crumbs, HomeGoods, Duane Reade, Petco, Associated Supermarket, Chase Bank, Michael’s Arts & Crafts, and Bank of America), Winick’s executive vice president Lori Shabtai says, “we now look forward to putting the whipped cream and cherry on the top with the smaller retail and complete this project.”  While many Upper West Siders would happily welcome smaller neighborhood retailers over the usual nationwide chains, neighbors will have to see if local shops can afford to operate in the sleek luxury development next to the likes of the big names.
