A crane counterweight fell yesterday afternoon, crushing parts of scaffolding that covers a pedestrian walkway at 97th and Columbus, according to West Side Spirit. Workers were dismantling the crane when the accident occurred, resulting in the equipment damage but no injuries. The crane was up as part of the construction of the mixed commercial/residential project of Columbus Square. The Department of Buildings issued a stop work order for the crane, although other work on the site continues, and violations were issued to the crane’s owner, operator, and general contractor.
