A little bit of Upper West Side celebrity real estate news to start your week…
The Post reports that Dianne Wiest is joining with her neighbors at 229 West 78th to sue her landlord for charging too much rent (something I’ve often wanted to do myself).
The actress (In Treatment, The Birdcage, Law & Order) and her neighbors claim they were illegally charged market rent (in Wiest’s case, $7,290/month) when their building should have been following rent-stabilization rules due to a tax break it received from the city.
From 1993-2004, 229 W. 78th had a J-51 tax abatement, yet the suit alleges the landlord told tenants their apartments could be deregulated anyway. The suit seeks to lower rent and recoup money paid in previous years.
