Dozens Arrested in Drug Bust at Amsterdam Houses
At least 28 people were arrested on Tuesday in a massive drug bust at the Amsterdam Houses (Amsterdam between 61st and 65th). New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly gave a statement about the sweep, stating that the housing project contained a massive ring of crack, cocaine, and heroin dealing that used high school students as lookouts. A nine-month probe had been conducted prior to the sweep after complaints of drug paraphernalia in hallways and dealing in lobbies. During the probe, undercover officers made more than 50 drug buys in five of the complex’s 13 buildings. The arrest included three high school students living in the complex who allegedly acted as lookouts and learned how to handle money and find potential buyers.
