Dutch Fraudster Sells At The Dakota
Normally, a two-bedroom at the historic Dakota (1 West 72nd) being sold for $4.6 million wouldn’t draw much attention. However, this isn’t “normally.”
The seller in this case was Dutch investor Jan-Dirk Paarlberg, who was convicted of fraud, forgery and money laundering in the Netherlands last year for his role in a $23.5 million extortion scheme.
The Real Deal reports that proceeds from the sale (closed earlier this month) were turned over the U.S. marshals at closing as part of an agreement Paarlberg previously reached with authorities. A spokesperson for the U.S. Marhsals Service confirmed the funds from the sale “have gone directly to the U.S. Marshals Service Asset Forfeiture Fund pending further order from the courts.”
Perhaps the Dakota’s co-op board should do a little more due diligence on future applicants, so as to avoid headlines like “Dutch Fraudster Sells At The Dakota” in local real estate publications.
