UPDATE 1/16: Some Notes On The Upper West Side Citibank Fire (With Video)

Scary scene at Broadway & 111th this morning, as a fire broke out in a Citibank just after 5:00 am and grew into a five-alarm blaze requiring nearly 200 firefighters to contain.

The photo above was snapped by MUW reader @matuzalem around 9:50 am.

From NBC-NY: “The fire started at 5:20 a.m.  and by 7:30 had grown into a 4-alarm blaze. Shortly after 9 a.m. the fire went to a 5th alarm.”

The Post notes that the fire reportedly started in the building’s basement.

The good news is that there do not appear to have been any serious injuries.

Unfortunately, there are reports that the fire damaged the neighboring building (2867 Broadway), which houses Samad’s Gourmet and The Heights Bar & Grill.

No details on the extent of the damage, but I’ve heard from some readers who think it’s serious enough that both businesses will be forced to temporarily close while they deal with the fallout.

The building that houses Citibank was described by one person as “a total loss.”

My sister snapped the photo below around 11:10 am, and while the scene looks under control, the area was still a mess nearly six hours after the blaze started.

The middle photo below, snapped by @eborghard around 9:45 am, shows the area enveloped in smoke.

MUW reader Jayne sent in the bottom photo around 9:30 am, showing emergency responders snaking down West 110th Street.
