Four Of EaterNY’s “38 Essential New York Restaurants” Are On The Upper West Side

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

eater38EaterNY released the July 2011 version of their “38 Essential New York Restaurants” list — four of them are located on the Upper West Side.

  • Gennaro Restaurant (665 Amsterdam): An Upper West Sider’s secret, Gennaro is no reservations, no credit and no frills. But its straightforward pastas and main proteins never disappoint in a neighborhood still massively lacking in good off-the-cuff dining options..

  • Salumeria Rosi Parmacotto (283 Amsterdam): Cesare Casella’s small plates parlor is great place for a few bites of premium imported antipasti and a glass of wine, or a larger meal of more substantial meat and pasta dishes. It’s the perfect spot to hit up before any event at Lincoln Center, or after long stroll through the park.
    .
  • Bar Boulud (1900 Broadway): It’s the quintessential Lincoln Center scene with solid food, an exciting wine program (choice bottles are served at cost weekly), and a killer terrine. It offers more flexibility in the dining experience than many of its uptown, uppity brethren.
    .
  • Cascabel Taqueria (2799 Broadway): [Note: Eater actually listed the UES location, but since an UWS location was just opened last week, I'm counting it] Excellent Mexican food, good prices, cool setting. Negates the need for longtime staple Maz Mezcal.

Also of note — Dinosaur BBQ (a MyUpperWest favorite from back when I visited college friends in Syracuse and ate at the original Dino) has been booted from the list to make room for Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster. Both are on 125th street and technically in Harlem, but that’s close enough to the UWS to merit a mention. Along those lines, I guess it’s also only fair to mention Yakitori Totto, which is only a stone’s throw away from Columbus Circle.

Click here for the full list of all 38 restaurants. It’s a pretty extensive list covering a wide-swath of cuisines and price-levels. I’ve been been to a bunch of the restaurants mentioned and most of the picks are spot on.
