Halloween at St. John the Divine

The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine (Amsterdam and 112th) has a full weekend of Halloween activities that many say top the list as some of the best of NYC’s Halloween events. This evening’s events start with a “Procession of the Ghouls” and a screening of Nosferatu, the 1922 silent classic based on the stories of Dracula. The full stretch of the nave is at the disposal of Ralph Lee and his theater company’s fantastic creatures of the night, and visitors are encouraged to brace themselves for increased ghostly mischief and ghoulish tricks. The event is scheduled to occur twice tonight, giving you an even better chance to head out to the cathedral and enjoy. Between the two performances is a Halloween cocktail reception with the cathedral’s Young Regents. Enjoy the creative energy with the Young Regents, who will be accompanied by the Young Benefactors from the Museum of Biblical Art (MoBIA) and the Notables from Carnegie Hall. Tomorrow’s events also promise to be fun and worthwhile… start with a “Morning of the Gargoyles,” where kids can enjoy readings from a gargoyles story and gargoyle arts and crafts. Then, the Halloween holiday concludes with “Crypt Crawl” tours. Let a crypt guide lead you through the cathedral’s crypt as you learn about the origins of Halloween as the Celtic New Year celebration and how it transformed into All Hallows Eve.
