It’s Probably Not the Best Idea to Eat the Plants in Central Park
City Room, a blog with the New York Times, had to back-pedal on Monday after they reported on Saturday that day lily shoots, growing in Central Park, are delicious to eat. After several commenters expressed some displeasure in the idea of taking plants from the park to eat, they did some further research and discovered that it is illegal to “deface, write upon, sever, mutilate, kill, or remove from the ground” any vegetation in the city’s public parks. Day lilies are particularly bad to take from the park, as they do not occur naturally and must be carefully planted there, according to Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. So if you are hungry in Central Park on the next beautiful spring day, we recommend you skip pulling a day lily shoot from the ground for a snack and instead go for a hot dog cart in order to avoid trouble.
