Inventor Of iPod Accessory Industry Lists Funky UWS Duplex Penthouse For $12.5 Million

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

Jeff Grady pretty much invented the iPod accessory industry back in 2001. He sold his company, Digital Lifestyle Outfitters, for $100 million in 2007.

Now he’s selling his tricked-out Upper West Side duplex at Ariel East for $12.5 million (2628 Broadway, between 99th/100th).

The 4 BR, 3.5 BA penthouse includes 4,000 square feet spread out over two floors and features a rock & roll theme, techie customizations, unobstructed “helicopter” views, and a $500K chandelier.

The apartment, which officially hits the market next week, was recently featured in the New York Times. The article features a bunch of details about the apartment’s rock theme (the wallpaper in the downstairs powder room is a compendium of vintage Rolling Stone magazine covers) and customizations.

There’s also this note regarding the phenomenal 360 degree views:

The unusual duplex, No. 37/38, is at the pinnacle of Ariel East, the glass tower at 2628 Broadway near 100th Street. Ariel East and its chunky sister tower, Ariel West, preside as the neighborhood’s only bona fide skyscrapers. Because their installation on an otherwise low-rise horizon provoked a hue-and-cry from preservationists and traditionalists, they will never be replicated; revamped zoning regulations prohibit future towers in the area. That belated stricture provides upper-floor Ariel residents with a perk and guarantee rarely available in New York City: the views they buy are protected, as is their privacy, despite floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

Here’s the listing detail:

First time in resale history – the coveted Ariel East Penthouse. Approximately 4000 square feet of expansive entertaining space with floor to ceiling wrap around windows. 360 degrees of breathtaking helicopter views of the Hudson River, Central Park and the reservoir, unobstructed open city north to the George Washington Bridge and South unobstructed views past the Empire State Building and so much more.

Private Elevator landing opens into a double height entry with floor to ceiling windows to the Hudson River. Triple mint duplex with four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms , central air, fireplace and corner terrace. There is a private Bosch laundry room and private storage bin as well.
