John Jay College Building Closed After Bedbug Infestation
A classroom building a John Jay College located at 445 W 59th (between Amsterdam and Columbus) has been closed after a bedbug “condition,” reports The New York Times. According to the article, the building was closed and classes held in the building were rescheduled or postponed Thursday afternoon after an inspection team with bug-sniffing dogs came in Tuesday and confirmed the bedbug problem on the first floor. While no other buildings in the area have found bedbugs and no bites have been officially reported, several skin rashes have been reported. Contrary to common belief, bedbugs can live in more than just beds; while their preferred habitat is in mattresses, sofas, and other furniture, they have been found in schools, hospitals, buses, trains, and movie theaters. John Jay College hopes to re-open the infested building, the North Hall Building, by Monday, after the building is treated by an extermination service.
