The New York Times is reporting that after four years and $41 million, the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center is close to opening.

The 17,500 square foot venue, located on West 65th, fill feature two new cinemas (the 150 seat Francesca Beale Theater and the more intimate 90 seat Howard Gilman Theater), an indoor cafe, and a 75 seat digital ampitheater for lectures and educational programs. The amphitheater contains a 152 inch plasma screen, which according to a Lincoln Center press release, is the largest of its kind on public display in the country.

The construction project is a significant expansion for the Film Society, which will still utilize the existing 268-seat Walter Reade Theater (opened in 1991). The new space will allow for even more independent and art house films a prove to be a real boon for lover’s of the genre.

The first film to be screened is Andew Rossi’s documentary, “Page One: Inside The New York Times.” It was well received by audiences at both Sundance and SXSW earlier this year and will debut on both new screens on June 17th, 2011.
