Last Day Of Free Kayaking At 72nd Street Boathouse

kayakingboathouse

Mentioned this in today’s events post, but in case it got lost in the shuffle I thought it deserved its own post…

One wouldn’t normally think that “October” and “kayaking in the Hudson” are a great match, but it’s also not normally 80 degrees this time of year. The poorly-named Downtown Boathouse at 72nd Street has been offering free 20-minute kayaking sessions in the Hudson all summer and today is their final day of the season.

It’s 76 degrees as I type this and it’s supposed to hover around 80 from 1:00 – 5:00 pm — seems like a good excuse for a final frolic in the Hudson.

Full details are available at the Parks Department website. You can also check out the Downtown Boathouse’s official site. They’re open until 5:00 pm today, with the last kayaks going out around 4:40.

There doesn’t seem to be a phone number to call, so I have no idea what kind of line, if any, to expect today. Lots of people are out of town for the long weekend, so you might be able to walk right up.

Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that the previously mentioned Pier I Cafe is just two blocks south of the kayak launch, so you always have that as a back-up plan or for post-kayaking drinks.
