Perhaps the DOT should have installed “Boat Lanes” rather than “Limo Lanes” on Riverside Boulevard. They might be needed if the worst-case scenario for Irene materializes.

Most of the Upper West Side is on relatively high ground and does not face flooding from any possible storm surge. However, a small sliver of the neighborhood, from 59th to 72nd streets and west of West End Avenue, is in “Evacuation Zone B” and may face flooding if Irene arrives as a category 2 storm. This strip of the UWS happens to be home to a large string of super-luxury apartment buildings that are home to a variety of NYC’s rich and famous, including The Adlyn, The Ashley, and The Rushmore, among others.

The latest news is that Irene has dropped to a Category 1 storm and is unlikely to strengthen as it makes its way north to NYC, so the towers along Riverside Boulevard are likely to be spared any water damage (although damage from gusting winds is a whole separate issue).

More pressing for the neighborhood is potential storm surge damage throughout Riverside Park, and especially Riverside Park South, which is in “Evacuation Zone A.” Areas in Zone A could experience storm surge from any sized hurricane making landfall close to New York City.

While you probably don’t think of the Upper West Side as a maritime center, boats docked at the 79th Street Boat Basin will be particularly susceptible to storm damage. It’s unclear how many owner were able to move their launches to a safer area.

On the outside chance that anyone needs them, here are the evacuation centers located on the Upper West Side:

  • John Jay College (Amsterdam & 59th)
  • Louis D. Brandeis HS (145 West 84th, between Amsterdam & Columbus)
  • IS 188 (154 West 93rd, between Amsterdam & Columbus)

NYC.gov has loads of Irene-related information if you have still have questions.
