‘Major’ Service Cuts to Become Reality after MTA Vote
The Metropolitan Transit Authority board voted this morning for an unprecedented cut of service in order to get closer to closing their massive budget deficit. In an almost unanimous vote (two members voted against the measure), the MTA board made service cuts, worth $93 million, official. The cuts leave millions of straphangers and tens of thousands of bus riders with longer waits and fewer options to get from point A to point B in the city. Included in the service cuts are several slowdowns of Upper West Side trains like the A and the 1, along with complete elimination of other lines in the city like the W and the V (which will be replaced by the M). As if the subway and bus cuts are not already a headache for New Yorkers, there is still at least one impending fare hike in the coming months. The 7.5% fare hike had been approved to take effect in mid-2011, but the MTA is rumored to accelerate the fare hike to as early as October 2010. [Source: WCBS, DNAinfo]
