Mama Mexico Faces Tax Man Troubles
Eater reports that Mama Mexico, the always-crowded Mexican restaurant with tableside guacamole at Broadway and 102nd, closed down late last week due to a seizure for non-payment of taxes. The closing comes as another in a series of troubles for the eatery, after an August class action lawsuit accused the business of withholding wages and overtime compensation, misappropriating employee tips, retaliation, pregnancy discrimination, encouraging a hostile work environment, and assault and battery. According to an Eater tipster, the lights were dimmed and the tables were cleared over the weekend but the bar was still stocked, so the restaurant seemed to be interested in reopening. In fact, an employee reported that they hoped to reopen on Monday. No word yet on whether the restaurant is bustling again and the mariachi band is back at work.
