As part of the MTA’s doomsday proposal for service cuts that includes elimination of discounts to students and partial or total shutdown of subway lines, three of the five crosstown bus routes will be eliminated at night. Gothamist reports that the M66, M79, and M96 buses will stop running for late night time slots, making transportation from the Upper East Side to the Upper West Side (and vice versa) even more difficult. The M86 will keep running at night, and the M72 service already terminates at midnight. While the cuts are not yet finalized, the MTA has stated that they are imminent unless they can find a way to cover their budget shortfall of about $340 million.
