Noise from Fairway Leaving Neighbors Ticked Off

fairwayFirst, the opening of Trader Joe’s only two blocks away, now this?  Fairway (74th and Broadway) is getting some bad news these days… Neighbors of the popular grocer are at their wits’ end with the noise generated as a result of daily operations, according to NY1. The store, which has been open for 78 years, has grown into a retail supermarket operation, and neighbors claim that what was once a small neighborhood store has now “taken over the neighborhood.”  Local Richard Contiguglia says that forklifts arrive at 5:00 am for deliveries, and the beeping “goes on for hours,” preventing sleep.  Another local, Freeman Gunter, says of the noise, “every day, all day, all the time and all night, it just never, never stops.”  While the neighbors claim that their calls to 311 have not resulted in enough action by the city, the Department of Sanitation has reportedly issued Fairway a total of 52 summonses since January 2008 for the dirty sidewalk, sidewalk obstruction, street obstruction and loose rubbish.  In addition, a spokesman for the Department of Environmental Protection, who is charged with maintaining control of city noise, told NY1 that they checked out the location, had a productive meeting with Fairway management regarding issues such as noise, idling and double parking, and advised Fairway on cleaning the sidewalk.  Meanwhile, Fairway’s states that they “take great pride in [their] commitment to being a good neighbor” and they “are working to quickly resolve this matter.”  Despite the claims of action to stop disturbing neighbors, locals still have problems with the store’s noise for now.
