New UWS Lululemon Pisses Off Local Block Association

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

Looks like the new UWS Lululemon that recently opened at 2139 Broadway (at 75th) isn’t making any friends with its neighbors.

Apparently the store has pissed off a local UWS block association by not providing any freebies for an upcoming block party.

DNAinfo has the story of the West 75th Street Block Association’s vs. Lululemon.

I can’t help but wonder if representatives of the 75SBA leaked this story to DNA in order to “shame” Lululemon, although perhaps the details just came out while DNA was working on a story about the upcoming block party.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Should Lululemon be obligated to contribute something? The store apparently has a company wide policy about not contributing to community groups.

Seems like much ado about nothing, and I certainly wouldn’t crap all over a store about this, but maybe that’s just me.

This is the problem with the Upper West Side becoming so corporate.
Boutiques like “Stoopher & Boots” have different agendas & “policies.” Companies like Lululemon have one goal only…to make money….they probably don’t give a crap about the neighborhood or their events.

Lululemon doesn’t care about the block association; Lulu doesn’t need the business or the good publicity. Instead, the company is actively engaged in community events such as free on-site yoga classes and supporting local athletes in various athletic meets. Shaming them is the equivalent of extortion.

Oh geez, these store pay taxes correct? Doesn’t some of that money go to the community? Besides, I know most of the stores offer free yoga classes once in a while too. I know it’s not the goodies some people would like but it’s something. It also sounds like they are putting businesses in a tough spot…. Provide goods and services that we deem appropriate or we will bad mouth you to the press. How is that right?

I like Monster’s comment. While I do think it would be a smart move on Lululemon’s part to embrace their new neighborhood with some goodies, I don’t think it’s right for them to be shamed, simply because they’re not willing to offer up free goods. Sounds like someone’s been watching a bit too many reruns of the Sopranos. Not to mention, there’s not much Lulu can do if it’s in the company’s corporate policy.

This is in line with the company’s objectivist philosophy, inspired by Ayn Rand. Doen’t really fit with the generally strong communal philosophy on the UWS. It’s a bad fit and the company is going to pay for this in the long run. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/28/business/media/combines-ayn-rand-and-yoga.html

The company is making $ hand over fist. The kind of people who shop there are the ones who can afford $100 yoga pants. They don’t give a F about not getting a free headband at the block party. Hell; they’re not even GOING to the block party.
