If you’re an Upper West Sider who has been waiting for the much anticipated New York City bike sharing program to launch, you’re going to have to keep waiting.
While the the newly named Citi Bike program begins for many areas of NYC in July, it won’t be coming to the UWS until June of 2013.
Transportation Nation had a post a few weeks ago about the program’s delayed launch on the Upper West Side.
(Speaking of delay, apologies for this belated post. Unfortunately, this is one of many that I’m behind on — I’m hoping to clear out the backlog over the next week or two).
If you’re looking for some background information on the program, check out the this MUW post from April.
About a month after that April post, Citibank bought the naming rights to the program. At the cost of more than $40 million over five years, the program is now officially know as Citi Bike.
When Citi Bike launches in July, virtually all Manhattan stations will be located south of 59th Street/Central Park South — click here for a map of the initial station locations (NOTE: This map will likely update over time).
I happen to be the only person I know who was raised in the suburbs and never learned how to ride a bike, so I’m not losing too much sleep over this delay.
That said, the Citi Bike program is a massive undertaking and I know many Upper West Siders were looking forward to participating. Anyone disappointed by this news?
