When initial reports of an UWS shooting started coming in late in the evening on Thursday, 10/27, the situation was a little scary. NYPD helicopters were flying overhead while dozens of heavily armed police flooded the neighborhood looking for a possibly armed suspect on the loose.

Follow-up stories the next day didn’t really provide too many additional details. It wasn’t until revelations last week that the same officer had been involved in a scuffle at the same corner exactly one month prior (9/27) that the story started getting weird.

Given those odd circumstances, it’s not too much of a surprise to learn that NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is now investigating the incident.

DNAinfo has the story on officer Benjamin Ambrosio, who was placed on “modified duty” after the alleged assault on 10/27. The 28 year-old, who joined the NYPD in 2005, has been stripped of his gun and badge while the investigation proceeds.

Apparently internal affairs got involved after “investigators noticed inconsistencies in Ambrosio’s accounts of the incidents,” police sources told DNA.

Once details of the second attack emerged, this story went from “wow!” to “what?”

I ended last week’s post on this incident with “Probably not the last you’ll hear about this…” and feel compelled to do the same now. Where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.
