Pinkberry vs. Yogurtland: Upper West Side Froyo Battle Brewing On Amsterdam Avenue

Thursday, July 11th, 2013

It’s been about three weeks since Pinkberry opened at 414 Amsterdam (near 80th).

In another month or two, a Yogurtland will open about 100 feet north at 420 Amsterdam, the long-vacant space that use to house 420 Bar & Lounge.

There were rumors floating around in May that a frozen yogurt shop at signed a lease at 420 Amsterdam but the deal had fallen through because of construction problems.

Apparently that’s not the case — both a worker and contractor at the site confirmed Yogurtland is planning to open in four-to-six weeks.

This will be the fourth Yogurtland in NYC, but the chain has more than 200 locations overall — with plans to add another 50 — including a large presence in California.

It’s a bit curious that they would open so close to another frozen yogurt store. This is purely speculation on my part, but given the timing, I think there’s a possibility that the owners weren’t aware of Pinkberry’s impending opening down the street.

Either way, UWS froyo lovers will soon have another option.

It will be interesting to see how the two stores fare in such close proximity to each other, to say nothing of the 16 Handles less than five blocks south at 325 Amsterdam (between 75th & 76th).

A quick look at Yogurtland’s menu reveals what appears to be a much larger selection of flavors than what’s available at Pinkberry — close to 80. I believe the store is self-serve, similar to 16 Handles.

For what it’s worth, the three other Yorgurtlands in NYC — Upper East Side, Chelsea/Midtown West, and Park Slope — all have solid ratings on Yelp.
